Basic Info
Name:Philip
Bio
I have two confessions to make. I like spectator sports. And I like poker. On this journal, I'm going to blog about both of them.

When I say i like sports, I do NOT mean that i like the North American, and now also European, phenomenon of pop-culture-influenced whiny-millionaire-populated pro sports. I just end up with too much revulsion against that culture to really enjoy the show, although i have a couple of local rooting interests. What i love is the sociology of sport, the way that different people attach themselves to different teams that somehow seem to reflect their personality. And since my personality is very much to side with the underdog, or more to the point to latch on to something that has the as-yet unfulfilled potential to be great and stay with it until it becomes great, my sporting interests tend to reflect that. In rough order of preference these are the teams i pull for:

  • United States national soccer teams, men and women's

  • Vanderbilt Commodores sports -- mbb, football, wbb, baseball, m & w tennis, w lacrosse, w & m soccer, golf

  • International club soccer: Real Madrid (temporarily ignore the part about whiny millionaires above), whatever English team has USians today, etc.
  • US pro soccer -- in theory i'm for the New England Revolution, but i don't care all that much who wins, as much as that great USian players be developed.

  • [at this point my interest drops off considerably, and i'm mostly just on a couple of local bandwagons]
  • New England Patriots -- but i did get on the season ticket list in 1996 before they were very good!

  • Boston Red Sox

This isn't my personal and ministry-related blog; that's [info]cynicallynaive. It's also not my tech blog; that's [info]philipthegeek. But I do hope to put enough content here, especially longer rants about the role of sports in society, that people who don't know me or care about the teams listed above might find something interesting every once in a while.

As of April 2005, this is also my poker journal.
